Myth #2: Eating extra protein builds muscle.

Simply eating more protein does not give you bigger muscles. It is true that you do need to consume more but it is the strength training that will develop your muscle mass.

In order to build muscle, your body needs three key components: proper amount of calories as carbohydrates for energy, a good source of protein to supply amino acids and a well-developed strength training program. A lack of calories from carbohydrates will cause your body to lack the primary energy source to feed your muscles. This will cause it to burn protein instead. On the flip-side, too much protein in your diet will cause your body to store it as fat.

Bottom Line: To build muscle, you need to eat a healthy diet, which includes a slightly higher amount of protein with carbohydrates combined with a strength training program done on a regular basis.

The timing of your protein is important. Research has shown that the pre-workout intake of protein is more important than the post-workout meal taken 15 -- 30 minutes after you complete your training. The optimum ratio as a pre-workout snack is 5:1 carbs to protein. The post-workout meal changes to 3:1 with another meal 1-2 hours later. Without the proper amount of carbs for energy and protein to supply the building blocks to regenerate muscle fibers after exercise, it becomes impossible to create larger muscles as a part of your strength training program.
