Inexpensive Back to School Workout Equipment

Inexpensive Back to School Workout Equipment

This summer was fantastic. You had the opportunity to chill in the sun and enjoy friends without the pressure of schoolwork and demanding professors. Now it’s time to pack up your things and get back into education mode. Think about how much of your time was spent watching the implausible bodies of Olympians demonstrating their athletic abilities while you simply watched.

Now as you prepare to move into your dorm, along with packing shower shoes, personal hygiene products and other dorm essentials, throw in some fitness equipment (and I’m not talking about the fancy fancy intimidating machines). Take a look at my favorite, inexpensive workout equipment. Perfect for those rainy days when you don’t want to walk (or run) to the campus rec center or weight room.

1) YOGA MAT | Don’t let the name fool you. You do not have to do yoga on a “yoga” mat. I mean you can, but skies the limit when you have a mat. Who really wants to get down on cold tile or old, dirty carpet to exercise? That would definitely be an exercise turnoff for me! Only $9 at Walmart.

2) FREE WEIGHTS | Free weights include barbells, dumbbells, ankle weights and/or wrist weights. They provide constant resistance for any workout. Watching a movie on Netflix? Sitting at your desk gazing at a blank word document? Do a few reps of bicep curls, lateral/horizontal arm raises, or leg lifts. Only 19.99 at Target.

3) RESISTANCE CABLES | Resistance cables, also called exercise bands, tubes, or the exercise rubber band, are inexpensive and offer constant resistance, versatility and portability. You can pretty much do any free-weight exercise with a resistance cable. Most include handles and come in a variety of lengths. During a workout they strain to go back to their loose position, like a rubber band, giving you greater opposition which makes your muscles worker harder. $7.99-$32.99 at Dicks Sporting Goods.

4) IRON GYM | The Iron gym is my new best friend, except for some reason it never talks to me. You can hook the iron gym to the top or bottom of your doorway for pull-ups, push-ups, chin-ups, dips, sit-ups and crunches. $29.99 at Target.

Now don’t get me wrong. There are plenty of workouts that can be done without workout equipment, but there is even a greater variety of simple exercises that can be done with miniscule workout equipment… if and only if you are ready to take your fitness journey to the next level. Are you motivated?
