Easily Lose Weight By Walking

This is the season when many think of getting fit and losing weight. Part of human nature is to think if it isn’t complicated or excruciatingly painful then it must not work. It is surprising to see how many people really think they can only lose weight if they starve themselves or commit to such an excruciating exercise plan that they almost hurt themselves. Actually, some do hurt themselves. This simply isn’t necessary or healthy.

The first thing a person needs to do when starting to lose weight is to realize it didn’t take a day for them to gain the weight and so it isn’t reasonable to think they should lose it in a day or two. Often when people watch some of the popular weight loss shows they see contestants losing 5 to 10 pounds in a week. Sometimes, these contestants lose that much weight week after week.

While there are some of those contestants that go on to keep the weight off, many of them gain part or all of the weight back after completing the show. This is because they set themselves up for goals that are impossible for most to keep up in the real world.

Anyone Can Lose Weight By Walking

This is a sound way to lose weight and improve health. The human body is designed to move by walking. Walking for weight loss is simply a matter of figuring up how many calories it takes to maintain a person’s weight and using any of a number of online calculators to help a person figure out how many minutes they need to walk at a brisk pace to burn about 250 calories a day.

The idea is once they know how many calories it takes to maintain their current weight then they should strive to keep their daily diet with-in that amount of calories. Then they need to figure out based on their gender, height, body type, and weight, how many minutes a day they need to walk briskly to burn 250 calories.

This will result in about 1/2 a pound of weight loss a week. If they wanted to lose one pound a week, then they could cut back on calories by 250 calories a day less than it takes to maintain their weight. This method would mean they are burning an extra 250 calories a day and consuming 250 calories less each day for a net deficit of 500 calories a day.

A woman who is 160 pounds and wants to lose 20 pounds could walk 3 miles a day at a pace of one mile per 15 minutes. This would be sufficient to burn 250 calories a day which would translate to 1/2 a pound weight loss a week without dieting because of the daily walking. From this example, it is easy to see that almost anyone can lose weight simply by walking.
